1. The Digital Foundation
The heart of any online school is its Learning Management System (LMS). Think of it as the digital equivalent of our school buildings. Platforms like Moodle or Blackboard serve as virtual campuses, offering students a space to attend lessons, submit assignments, and interact with their peers and tutors. They’re essentially the Hogwarts of the digital world, minus the moving staircases.

2. The Virtual Classroom
Just as you’d have a physical classroom with a blackboard and desks, online schooling provides ‘live’ classrooms. Using tools like Zoom or Microsoft Teams, lessons are conducted in real-time. Students can raise their hands (or virtual emojis), ask questions, and engage in group discussions, ensuring the human touch remains intact in the digital sphere.

3. Flexibility at Its Finest
One of the great joys of online schooling, apart from attending a class in one’s bunny slippers, is the flexibility it offers. While there are scheduled classes, many online schools provide recorded lessons. So, if you’ve got a family trip to Brighton or just fancy a lie-in, you can catch up later, ensuring you never miss out.

4. Dynamic Learning Materials
Gone are the days of lugging around hefty textbooks and jotting down notes till your hand cramps. Online schools often provide a rich tapestry of learning materials – from interactive videos and quizzes to digital textbooks and online labs. And the beauty? It’s all available at the click of a button.

5. Assessments in the Digital Age
Worry not; online schools haven’t done away with exams (sorry, students!). Assessments are crafted to fit the digital mould. From time-bound online quizzes to assignments uploaded onto the platform, the process is streamlined and efficient. And yes, there are provisions to ensure academic integrity, so no sneaky business!

6. Personalised Learning Paths
Each student is one of a kind, with their own arrangement of assets and difficulties. Online schooling can cater to this individuality. With analytics and tracking, educators can tailor resources and support to each student, ensuring everyone gets the chance to shine.

7. The Importance of Community
An online school isn’t just about clicking through lessons. There’s a strong sense of community. From online clubs and societies to parent-teacher conferences via video call, the school spirit is very much alive and digital.

Online schooling, while a departure from the hallowed halls and echoing corridors of traditional schools, offers a contemporary twist to education. It combines the best of both worlds, ensuring students receive a stellar education without boundaries. As the digital realm continues to shape our futures, online schools stand as a testament to the adaptability and resilience of education.

Online schooling, with its blend of technology and education, has woven a tapestry that offers learners a remarkable amalgamation of flexibility, innovation, and quality education. Yet, as with any learning environment, a few best practices can go a long way. For all our tech-savvy learners out there, we’ve collated some quintessentially British strategies to help you make the most of your online education.

1. Craft a Productive Study Space
While it might be tempting to snuggle under the duvet with your laptop, creating a designated workspace can be transformative. Choose a spot with good lighting, preferably by a window. A desk adorned with all your study materials, a comfortable chair, and perhaps a few houseplants to keep you company will make a difference. Keep in mind, your current circumstance can impact your temperament and efficiency, so offer it the consideration it merits.

2. Structure, Structure, Structure
The allure of online schooling is its flexibility. However, maintaining a semblance of routine can anchor your day. Start with a traditional British breakfast, be it a bowl of porridge or a toast with marmalade. Jot down a timetable, pencilling in breaks for a cup of tea and perhaps a mid-day walk. Setting clear boundaries between study time and leisure helps maintain focus.

3. Engage Actively
Let’s be honest; sometimes it’s tempting to mute the microphone and drift away. However, the essence of effective online learning lies in being a functioning member. Seek clarification on some pressing issues, join conversations, and submerge yourself in the lessons. Remember, the more you put in, the more you get out.

4. Embrace the Digital Toolbox
From revision apps to online resources, there’s a cornucopia of digital tools at your fingertips. Explore them! Sites like BBC Bitesize or the myriad of British online libraries can complement your school resources. But remember, always cite any external sources you use.

5. Stay Connected with Your Peers
Learning isn’t just about books and lectures. It’s also about camaraderie and shared experiences. Organise virtual study groups, or perhaps a Friday evening online game night. Build bridges, not just digital ones but those of friendships and mutual support.

6. Take Regular Breaks
Staring at the screen for hours can be taxing. Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. Stand up, stretch, and perhaps potter about in the garden. Give your brain and eyes a well-deserved break.

7. Feedback is Golden
Your educators are there to guide and support you. On the off chance that you’re battling with a point or need explanation, connect. Our school values encouraging a climate of open correspondence, so your voice will continuously be heard.

What is an online school?

Like conventional schools, students attend their classes live, but with a crucial distinction: all lessons take place online. There’s no need for them to commute to a physical school building. Instead, they access their lessons by logging into the Thomas Keith Independent School’s web portal a few minutes before the scheduled start time of their classes.

Teaching occurs in real-time in a digital classroom that comes equipped with a whiteboard, live video and audio streams from the teacher, and a chat box. During the course of the lesson, pupils can freely interact with their teacher and peers via the chat box or their microphone, as needed. They can even be given access to write and draw on the whiteboard. They submit assignments and receive feedback on them through the student portal, with the entire process being online.

Through an amalgamation of voice, text, whiteboard annotations, notes, recordings, presentations, and screen sharing, classes are made more engaging and interactive than in traditional school settings. Students can be assigned to complete specific exercises, share their work, or present to the class. Every pupil also has the opportunity for direct and private communication with their teacher, ensuring that nobody feels overlooked or left behind.
